The flexi disc was a novel marketing tool to add a little spice to a product. The fact it was cheap, light and thin made it the ideal accompaniment to magazines. The addition of the freebie, or covermount was used by numerous publications from poetry, comedy, porn (See the pink pages for these), educational and more commonly, teen’ magazines. At their zenith, dedicated music magazines sported flexis on their covers and one, Flexipop, was dedicated to the 80’s pop and rock scene. This magazine lasted two years before it’s demise as the new fangled Cd took over. See the Flexi-Pop page. Cassettes and then Cd’s went on to be the new covermount.
Below are Teen Magazines and Music magazines from the 60’s and 70’s. There is some crossover where covermounts are concerned. This page mostly deals with music and satire. Others can be found on the Education pages.
The first gallery consists of flexis given away with magazines for teen girls (in the main). Serenade, Roxy, Melanie, Jackie, 19, Valentine, Mirabelle and Honey Magazine.
From the more pop orientated gender magazines we move toward the music press where the music generally got more “interesting”. Melody Maker, Sounds, Record Mirror and the NME (in particular) were the hard-hitters. Smash Hits joined the fray from 1978 and covered the more poppy, commercial end of the scale giving promotional space to Human League, Eurythmics and Depeche Mode.
